Here's a guide for people who cant seem to get their avatar to work right or cant work dream maker. I'll add pictures later if I feel motivated.

First, you need to start with a SQUARE picture. If the picture isn't perfectly square, you're going to run into issues later on.

WEBSITE PORTION

Once you have your picture, Go to this site...
http://www.picresize.com/

Either upload the picture by clicking the "From Computer" button or enter the image link using the "From Web" button.

Once you have your picture, click the "Continue (Resize, Crop & Special Effects)" button.

On the next page you will see a copy of your picture. Ignore all the buttons you see on this page and go down to where it says "2 Resize Your Picture:"

Change the drop-down menu next to "Make My Picture:" to "Custom Size..."

Enter "96" in the Width and Height boxes that appear. Make sure the drop-down boxes next to them say "Pixels"

Under "3 Choose Special Effect" make sure "None" is selected.

Under "4 Save As:" make sure the Image Format is PNG

Click "I'm Done, Resize My Picture!"

On the next screen, click the "View Image" button. If you did things right, you'll see a 96x96 version of your picture in the popup. This is where the issue with needing the square picture comes up. If your picture was not square then your image will be distorted.

Click on the "Save to Disk" button on the page now and save the image to your computer.

DMG PORTION Part 1

In DMG. Push F3 on your keyboard.

On the "Game Options" menu. Click the "PROFILE" button.

On the next menu click on the "*.dmi" button. This will create an icon file for you. Name it whatever you like.

Open that file.

DREAMMAKER PORTION

You're now in Dreammaker, byond's icon editor program.

In the top right corner there should be 2 grayed out boxes next to where it says "DMI File" that both say 96.

In the white section of the screen, there should be a black lined white square. Right-click in that area.

Click on "Import..."

Open the file you saved from the website. That will make that image appear in the large white area.

Click on the box to the left of it and delete it (Push Delete on your keyboard or just right-click it and push delete)

Save the file.

DMG PORTION Part 2

Back on DMG again. Push F3 on your keyboard.

On the "Game Options" menu. Click the "PROFILE" button.

Click the "Upload" button. (It's next to the "*.dmi" button you clicked before.)

Read the rules and make sure your avatar follows them.

Click "OK"

Open the icon file you just saved.

The box above the "Upload" button will go blank. That's normal. Close the menu.

You're all set. Click on yourself or talk. You should see your icon now.

I'm gonna go ahead and ask what's been on my mind since this whole avatar change: Is there any particular reason we switched it from just entering an image link to doing this whole giant .dmi process thing?

I'm sorry, Eclipse. But these instructions are confusing.

Haven't played this since 5D's ended but I'm willing to guess it was due to abuse stemming from BYOND's really poor management of images.

It says it detects the dimensions of an icon. Not a picture.

You can set any image file to a icon type and use Icon Functions to determine the size of the icon.

The main thing here is that the image has to actually be successfully loaded before you can run any of the icon procs to determine its size. Which defeats the purpose of keeping multi-megabyte-sized pictures out of the upload.

I haven't legit screwed around with DM code in a while, so I don't claim to be an expert, and Icefire can chime in and explain exactly why it is the way it is right now, but Mav was just nitpicking, so it hardly matters either way. :?
